Everywhere you look the phrase “burnout” seems to be mentioned with increasing, and worrying, regularity. Google searches for the term jumped by 81% last year, and the latest nationwide survey found that 35% of us are struggling to balance our workloads with mental and physical wellbeing. So what is causing all this burnout in the cyber security industry, and what can employers do to stop it?

A lot can change in a year. It’s an old cliché but one that still rings true, and even more so when the year in question was one as turbulent as 2023. This time last January we were thrilled to welcome Sam McNaughton and Jasmine Miller to the Trident Search team as key additions to our Cyber Vendors desk. Over the course of the last twelve months, both Jazz and Sam have proven themselves to be invaluable members of the team, landing deals, securing clients and being a huge part of the office culture.

For those of us working in the cyber security industry, 2023 was a bit of a rollercoaster ride. The good news is that according to the latest ISC2 Global Workforce Study, the number of people employed reached a previously unseen height of 5.5 million. Yet this is somewhat tempered by the minor issue of the 4-million-person shortfall needed to adequately defend against global cyber threats. So, as we go into this year, what is in store for the cyber security workforce?
